A simple story, told well, with little flash or pizzaz. Subtle and economical, a very big departure for Darren Aronofsky from the overblown of Requiem For A Dream and The Fountain and therefore by far his best film. But in truth, it is Mickey Rourke’s film. A performance of both delicacy and tremendous force, it feels that he is telling his own story through the character of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson.
Most of all, the nicest thing about this latest Aronofsky venture, is that despite the essentially tragic nature of the subject, there is a a very human sense of levity throughout which is a welcome relief form his normal unrelenting bleakness.
