I lived in Manchester From 2000-2001. I had paid council tax to them for a longer period than that. In 2006 I had a letter demanding money from me. My solicitor sent them a letter pointing out the fundemental problems with the demand. 2 weeks ago they had the bailiffs ready to come round and take my stuff. We’ve been frantically trying to get statements from my bank and putting them off since. Until now:
Dear Mr Kirby,
Further to my email of yesterday, I have uncovered some new information.
As we are dealing with an account and payments of around ten years ago, yesterday evening I decided to dig deeper into our system. I have found payments that were recorded against an account numbered 506094808 with the same name. This is too much of a coincidence, and due to the time that has passed I am not prepared to waste any more of our time pursuing this matter and I would like to draw the matter to a close.
Though the account was still live (and therefore Mr Deane still liable) until at least August 2002 when payments ceased, I am prepared to overlook this matter due to the time that has passed.
I have transferred the payments totalling £1532.76 to Mr Deane’s account numbered 510059567. This left a small debit of £51.04 which I have this morning written off. Mr Deane’s account balance is now zero.
I can only apologise for us not uncovering the payments at an earlier stage, but it is a timely reminder that customers also need to keep us full informed when they vacate a property.
I will telephone you later today to confirm these details.
Yours Sincerely,
Martin Smith
